Developing Healthy Relationships for Teens Experiencing Young Love

As time has progressed, so have the expectations for marriage and children. Many members of our families were married at a young age, including in their teenage years. But for most people today, that is not acceptable. Teens are expected to go off to college and establish themselves before they decide to get hitched. While times have changed, young love in teens has not. As a parent, you want your teen to be as prepared as possible for love, heartbreak and all the other grey areas in between. A recent article by Today discusses parenting tips on developing healthy relationships for teens.

Tips on Teen Romance

  • Try to limit judgments. Developing healthy relationships in teens can be a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. You may not like who they are dating, which could cause tension between the two of you. Try to set appropriate limitations on who your teen can date and the type of interactions they are allowed to have early on. Make sure who they are dating embodies the values and traits you are trying to teach your teen. If they do, try to be open to them even if you don’t think they’re a good fit for your teen.
  • Discuss the importance of balance. If you feel your teen is too involved in their new or current relationship, suggest other activities they can do to create balance in their life. Encourage them to spend more time with their friends or become involved in an after school activity.
  • Don’t ridicule your teen. No matter how unrealistic the relationship or crush is, it’s important to respect your teens feelings. Developing healthy relationships for teens means developing a healthy relationship between you and your teen.
  • Communication is key. Teasing or ridiculing your teen about their feelings could create communication issues. They could become more secretive about current of future relationships. Communication is key in making sure they are developing healthy relationships.

Building a Foundation

Developing healthy relationships for teens is essential for them learning self-worth and self-respect. If teens don’t build good foundations for themselves, they could have serious issues developing healthy relationships later in life. It’s important to be there to support your teen in any experience they are going through, whether that’s young love or emotional issues. Let them know you’re there to discuss current events in their life and that you want to learn about their interests. Talking about your past experience of love as a teen is a great way to bond and educate them on the do and don’ts of developing healthy relationships for teens.
